The classic 1176 "Blue Stripe" - now in your 500 series rack.
What it is
The FET-type solution was first used for its application in the legendary UREI 1176 compressor from the 70s. The most important feature inspired by revision A is the input transformer used and pure class A output stage. The compressor is equipped with a relay bypass, 2:1 Ratio and Slam Mode accessible on the front panel.
What it does
The 576 BS’s major selling point is its ultra-fast attack time — 20 µS. The 576 BS Ratio buttons allow four different modes of operation: 2:1 Ratio (soft compression); 4:1 ratio (moderate compression); 8:1 ratio (severe compression); 12:1 ratio (mild limiting); 20:1 ratio (hard limiting); S – SLAM, All Buttons In trick mode.
The 576 Blue Stripe from IGS Audio brings the sound of the original 1176 Revision A to your 500 series rack. The Revision A 1176 features a more aggressive compression character than later versions, which is favoured for adding punch to vocals and other sources.
The 576 Blue Stripe includes Carnhill Input and Output transformers.
Controls
The Input knob control the gain of the signal being fed to the compressor, therefore increasing the amount of gain reduction. The Output control adjusts the amount of make-up gain after the compression stage.
The Attack knob controls how fast the 576 reacts to program material, it follows the original 1176 behaviour of Slow to the left and Fast to the right. The Release control works in a similar way, but adjusts the speed in which the compressor stops the compression of the signal.
The Ratio controls the amount of compression when the signal passes the 576's threshold. The 576 includes all of the ratios of the original 1176 (4:1, 8:1, 12:1 and 20:1) and also adds a more subtle 2:1 setting, as well as S mode. This setting is the classic All-buttons-in mode, famous for creating extreme compression.
Applications
The 1176 is useful on almost any source. The more characterful "Blue Stripe" version is most popular on on Rock and Pop vocals, acoustic and electronic drums, and amped or synth bass.
